CNC MILLING OVERVIEW

What Is CNC Milling and How It Works?

CNC milling is a subtractive machining process that uses computer-controlled rotary cutting tools to remove material from solid workpieces and produce precise custom parts.

CNC MILLING CAPABILITIES

Our Advanced CNC Milling Capabilities

Tik Precision offers versatile CNC milling solutions to meet complex manufacturing needs. Our services are categorized into 3-axis and 5-axis milling, ensuring precision for parts with varying degrees of complexity. With the capability to machine a variety of materials, including metals like aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium, as well as durable plastics, we cater to projects of all scales—from low-volume prototypes to high-volume production runs.

3-AXIS MILLING

Efficient machining for flat and prismatic parts

3-axis CNC milling is best for prismatic parts such as plates, blocks, brackets and simple housings. It supports flat surfaces, pockets, slots, holes and threads, making it suitable for rapid prototyping and low-to-medium volume production.

Best For

4-AXIS MILLING

Rotary machining for cylindrical and multi-face parts

4-axis CNC milling adds rotation to 3-axis motion, making it suitable for cylindrical surfaces, helical grooves, screw threads and multi-face parts in one setup. It is often used when parts require better consistency than 3-axis machining but do not need full 5-axis access.

Best For
5-axis CNC machining center with trunnion rotary table, milling a complex aluminum component in one setup — high precision 5-axis machining services

5-AXIS MILLING

Complex precision machining for advanced geometries

5-axis CNC milling adds two rotary axes to 3-axis motion, enabling complex surfaces, undercuts and angled features in one setup. It is ideal for impellers, turbines, aerospace parts, medical implants and complex molds requiring high accuracy and fine finishes.

Best For
3-Axis

Best for simple geometry, lower setup cost and efficient production of flat or prismatic parts.

4-Axis

Better for cylindrical parts, multiple faces and improved consistency without the cost of full 5-axis machining.

5-Axis

Recommended for complex industrial parts, freeform surfaces and demanding tolerance requirements.

FINISH SELECTION PANEL

CNC Milling Surface Finishes

Surface finish is never cosmetic. It determines gasket compression, leak paths, coating adhesion, fatigue life, and how reliably your parts assemble.

At Tik Precision, we machine and finish CNC parts to the surface spec your design actually calls for — not a generic “as smooth as possible”:

— As-machined  cost-optimized, Ra 1.6–3.2 μm typical
—Bead-blasted  uniform matte finish, hides tool marks
— Brushed  directional grain, for visible aesthetic surfaces
— Polished low-Ra surfaces for sealing faces or optical components
—Anodized Type II decorative, corrosion-resistant, available in dyed colors
— Anodized Type III (hardcoat)  wear-resistant, for sliding and contact surfaces

Every batch is measured on a calibrated profilometer to the Ra value on your drawing, and the reading ships with the parts. The finish on your first prototype matches the finish on your thousandth production run — no drift, no “close enough.”

Questions Buyers Usually Ask First

These answers help engineering and purchasing teams understand CNC milling tolerances, materials, lead time, inspection support, and production options before requesting a quote.

Tolerance

Materials

Lead Time

Inspection

Low-Volume

Q1:What is your standard tolerance for CNC milling?

Our standard tolerance control follows a drawing-first principle under the ISO 9001. Depending on the specific requirements and corresponding machining process, tolerances can be controlled down to ±0.002 mm.Tighter tolerances available upon request with design review.

Q2: What is the minimum wall thickness you can reliably mill?

Down to 0.05 mm, depending on material, tool access, and feature aspect ratio. We flag limit cases during DFM review.

Q3: When should I use 5‑axis instead of 3‑ or 4‑axis?
  • 3‑axis: Flat or prismatic parts, lower cost
  • 4‑axis: Parts requiring rotary indexing or helical features

  • 5‑axis: Complex contours, undercuts, angled features, or reducing setups for better accuracy

Q4: What is your typical lead time for milled parts?

3-7 days for prototypes and low-volume production. One-day expedited available.

Q5: Can you mill production quantities with the same quality as prototypes?

Yes. Same machines, same tolerances, same inspection protocol. No requalification needed when scaling.

Q6: Do you provide inspection reports?

Yes. Full CMM or optical inspection reports available per your print. Critical dimensions can be 100% measured.

Q7:Do you offer DFM feedback before production?

Yes. Every CAD file receives a DFM review. We flag manufacturability issues, recommend geometry changes, and suggest cost-saving alternatives — before machining starts.d, and no upfront tooling investment.
